Katana Arcade Cabinet

Who isn't dreaming of his own arcade cabinet? Unfortunately, they tend to be big, bulky and very expensive. The Dream Authentics Katana, however, is quite affordable! And because it's designed as a tabletop unit it's not too difficult to find a good place for it.
The Katana has a 17" display, two speakers, a subwoofer and comes loaded with over 200 games. It has full arcade controls: joystick, spinner, trackball and buttons. Besides that, it also plays cds and dvds. The core of the machine is a pc running Windows and Mame, and it's even possible to play pc games on it! The price starts at 2495$.
Besides this unit, Dream Authentics also sells other arcade cabinets. Their most impressive unit is the Eladius, with a 33" monitor and controls for four players. And probably a price tag that requires you to sell one of your kidneys!

Hydrodynamic Building Kit

Toys like this (and all the cool Lego sets that weren't available 20 years ago) make me wish I was 10 years old again. The Hydrodynamic building kit contains water tanks, tubes, pumps, valves and other stuff to build all sorts of high tech fountains. You build a frame, put all the elements you want on it and connect them with tubes and valves. The entire setup is then placed in a tray of water, connected to a pump and then switched on. If you did it right, you get a cool fountain. If you did it wrong, better hope there's a towel nearby!
To make it even cooler, you could add some sort of dye to the water. Fluorescent dye combined with a blacklight would give a really incredible effect!

USB panic button

Since all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, nobody can stay focused on his or her work all day long. Everybody needs to take a little break from time to time, some a bit more often than others. Unfortunately, there's this guy called "Boss" who simply doesn't understand that, so instead of relaxing we spend most of the time looking over our shoulders when we play games or browse the web while we are supposed to work. Not exactly fun, isn't it?
This button solves this little problem once and for all. With one push, you can open any file of your choice, hiding your off-work activities. Shaped as a button that a supervillain would use as a last resort to blow up his secret underground lair rather than be captured and brought to justice, this button can be programmed to open a boring spreadsheet, presentation, charts, whatever you wish!

Ultimate Gaming Chairs

If you think the Pyramat Sound Rocker is cool, wait until you see these beauties! The first one, the Hotseat Gaming Futon, looks like it's something slammed together from old furniture and speakers. It has 6 Hifi speakers, a subwoofer, 3 audio inputs and a remote control.

The second one is called the Ultimate Game Chair. If I had to choose one of these chairs, it would definitely be this one! Looking like the pilot's seat in a spaceship, this chair has 12 vibration motors, 3D speakers, lighting, beverage holders and built-in controllers. The unit costs $399, wich I think is quite cheap for something so cool!

The next one, the D-BOX GP-100, is built for racing simulations. It has three-axis motion, so you feel the acceleration, the braking and even bumps in the road. One downside, the 15000$ price tag. Ouch!

And finally, the mother of all gaming chairs, the Force Dynamics Rally Simulator! This looks actually more like something the Air Force would use for training fighter pilots. Three degrees of freedom, a huge projection display and probably a price tag that's out of this world!

Star Wars chess set

Professional chess players will probably laugh at this, but if you like Star Wars you'll probably drool over his, even if you don't play chess. Based on the full Star Wars saga (no Queen Amidala, however, or, thank God, Jar-Jar Binks), this chess set has 32 hand-crafted pieces.
On the light side, we have Yoda and Obi-Wan as the king and queen (yes, I realize this sounds weird), Han Solo, princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, C3PO, R2D2 and clone troopers as pawns. On the dark side, there's the Emperor and Darth Vader as king and queen (WTF? Queen Darth Vader?), Boba and Jango Fett, Darth Maul, count Dooku and stormtroopers.

Flipstart Mini PC

The Flipstart Mini PC, an ultra-small portable PC backed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, is now available from Dynamism. This computer fills the gap between a laptop and a PDA. It has a 1.1 Ghz Pentium-M processor, 512 megabytes of RAM, a 30 gb harddrive, 5.6" display with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels (quite impressive for such a small display), Wifi, Bluetooth, integrated camera and USB 2.0 ports.
The computer can be ordered with either Windows XP professional or Windows Vista Business. The specs seem to be a bit low for Vista, however. I don't really think it would run smoothly on it! Of course, you could always put Linux on it!

iPhone will feature GPS?

The first generation iPhone hasn't been launched, and yet rumors about the second generation emerge. The second generation would be launched at the 2008 Macworld expo and have GPS. The source of this is the rumor that Apple will incorporate GPS chips in the next iPhone, wich could help in getting better reception in urban or wooded areas. No official announcment of this has been made, of course.

If this is true, buying an iPhone this summer would be quite stupid, since it will be outdated in less than a year! Frankly, it doesn't make sense. The first one hasn't been launched yet but they are already working on a hardware update. Why not just put in in from the beginning? This is a bit like Nintendo, with the DS and the DS Lite.

Poker accessories

Let's face it: playing poker on a boring kitchen table with matches or buttons for chips just isn't fun. Using real chips is a good start to bring the Vegas atmosphere to your home. And with the folding poker table top you can turn every table in a professional poker table, including felt playing surface and trays for drinks and poker chips.
And if you want to impress your friends even more, an automatic card shuffler will do the trick nicely! Just divide a deck of cards in two piles, put them in the shuffler and in a few seconds, you have a perfectly shuffled deck of cards!

Megatouch Elite Edge ION

Now this is what I call an arcade machine for the 21st century! No gigantic, heavy cabinet with a crt display like a fish bowl but a compact tabletop unit with an LCD touchscreen. Although it looks like something you'd expect to see in a casino it has no gambling games. The unit is coin-operated, has a 15 inch touchscreen, a joystick and 160 games. The games that are installed include puzzle, strategy, card, action and quiz games.
With a price tag of 3999£ and a weight of 30 kg, this is of course not something that's intended for home use. The Megatouch Elite Edge ION is a professional arcade machine designed for arcade halls and bars. Could this machine be the start of a new arcade age?

MP3 Alarm Clock

Nobody likes to wake up to an annoying beeping sound. I swear, a buzzing alarm clock must be the most nerve-wrecking sound ever invented! Sure, it will make you wake up in no time (I bet you could even reanimate a coma patient with it) but that doesn't make it any less annoying.
With the MP3 Alarm Clock, this is a problem of the past. Instead of an annoying buzzer, it plays your favourite MP3s! It works like any other MP3 player. Connect it to your pc with the USB cable, drag and drop files and you're ready to go! Okay, it has only 64 megabytes, but it's not meant to be a fully fledged MP3 player. It is battery powered (4 AA batteries) and compact enough for travelling use.

USB MinFridge

Here's another not-so-useless gadget to plug into your usb port. Although mini fridges the size of a briefcase have been around for quite a while, this one is the smallest I have ever seen. It is big enough to hold a single can of soda. Great for use in the workplace, when some moron forgot to refill the fridge and you're stuck with a warm can of soda, or when you're one of those people who takes an hour to finish a can and you don't want it to warm up in the meantime.

Pyramat Sound Rocker

You love playing videogames? Good. You like to turn up the volume? Even better! This seat, the Pyramat Sound Rocker, will enhance your gaming experience like nothing else. It makes you feel like you're part of the action!
This seat has two 8 watt speakers located near the head, and a powerfull 30 watt subwoofer located in the back, wich makes you feel things like gunfire and explosions. A control panel to adjust volume and tone settings is built into the side of the seat. It also has a headphone jack. When a headphone is used, the audio is diverted to it but the subwoofer will still be used for vibrations. Excellent for late night gaming sessions!
The Pyramat Sound Rocker can be used for game consoles, handheld consoles, tv, vcr, dvd, or any other equipment that has an audio output. It can be folded for easy storage. A must have for the hardcore gamer!

Optimus Maximus keyboard preorders

It has been announced and delayed again a million times, but apparently the Optimus Maximus keyboard is available for preorder! That is, if you are rich or crazy enough to spend $1564.37 on a keyboard.

Of course, it's not just a keyboard. Every key has a small OLED display so they can display anything you want. You can change the layout easily from Azerty to Querty, or set it to use Cyrillic, Arabic or Chinese characters. You can even configure it for your favourite first person shooter!
If you want to buy one, you'd better be fast, because only 200 of them will be available when it's launched!

Creative Playdock Z500

As we all know, there are lots and lots of accessories available for the iPod. Some useful, some a bit weird and some too useless to describe. But what about other audio players? Believe it or not, there are other portable MP3 players besides the iPod! Creative has some really good ones (much better and cheaper than the iPod in my opinion) and what do you know, there are accessories for them as well!
The Creative Playdock Z500 transforms the Creative Zen Vision portable audio player into a boom box. It has a subwoofer (24 watt) and two drivers (12 watt each), a remote control, can be powered by an adapter or batteries (8 C size cells) and can be connected to your tv to play videos. When the adapter is used, it also charges the player.

Wii still outselling the Playstation 3

For the fourth month in a row, Nintendo is the number one in the hardware sales chart. The best selling home console is still the Wii, wich remains in limited supply (I got mine a week after it launched in Europe, yay!). At the bottom of the charts is the Playstation 3. The most remarkable thing is that even the PS2 is outselling the PS3! The same pattern can be seen in portable consoles. The Nintendo DS reigns supreme, selling more than twice as much as the PSP.
I think the Wii is a great console, despite the outdated graphics. The CPU is essentially an improved Gamecube. What it needs are a few killer games that are designed from the ground up for the Wii, and not Playstation or XBox ports. This will almost always result in crappy graphics. For example, Zelda: Twilight Princess looked quite impressive, because it was designed with the Gamecube and Wii in mind. The graphics of Spiderman 3, however, look like they come from a PS1!
What games am I looking forward to? First of all, Resident Evil 4. The graphics look quite impressive for the Wii. Another game in the RE series is Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. This will be an "on-rails shooter"; I hope Nintendo will come up with some sort of gun for the Wiimote before it's released! I'm also curious about the new Final Fantasy game for the Wii. Square Enix isn't too generous with details, however. No screenshots, no videos, nothing! I hope they will finally reveal at least something!

Aiptek Digiprotect

Every evil mastermind needs a security system for his secret underground lair. While this surveillance camera set isn't exactly military grade equipment, it's perfect for the beginning super villain, or as a baby monitor.
The camera has a 640x480 CMOS-sensor and a microphone. Audio and video is transmitted wireless with a range of about 30 meters. The receiver has a 1.8" LCD display.
An additional feature is a trigger that switches the camera on automatically as soon as a noise is detected (a door opening, ...). The receiver supports up to four cameras on four different channels. The set includes one camera but additional ones can be bought separately.

PicoZ Helicopter

Radio-controlled helicopters are known to be expensive, complicated and difficult as hell to fly. The PicoZ Helicopter, however, is an IR-controlled helicopter that's small and stable enough to fly indoors! It's only 17 cm long, weighs 10 grams and is made of polypropylene foam that's strong enough to take some beatings. It's powered by a lightweight lithium ion battery that's recharged by connecting it to the IR remote control. A 30 minute charge is enough for 10 minutes of flying.
The IR control has a range of approximately 10 meters, more than enough for indoor flight. Flying it outdoors is not exactly recommended because with such a light weight it's very sensitive to wind. The helicopter is available in three different channels, so you can fly up to three at once without interference. Since the rotor is quite fragile, you get three spare rotors with the helicopter.

Instant Noodle Timer

If you like instant ramen noodles, take a look at this. It looks like a small gas stove, but it's actually a timer. Its purpose is to make sure your noodles don't cook too long or are still crispy when you start eating them. The timer has a blinking led to let you know your noodles are ready.
Despite the nice design, it's just a timer. Nothing more. No, wait, it's a 25$ timer! I have an electronic kitchen timer that cost me 5 euro, sticks to my fridge with a magnet and beeps when it has reached zero! No flashing leds for me! Nice attempt at being original, but I think it's just too expensive for a timer, especially a timer that's designed for cooking the cheapest food in the world...

New stuff from Think Geek

Today, Think Geek added lots of cool stuff to their catalog. If you have never heard of them, Think Geek is the mother of all geeky gadget shops. It has lots of cool toys, books and computer accessories.
A cool book they added is "Where's my jetpack?". If the predictions from the 1950s and '60s came true, we would all be flying around with jet packs and personal flying saucers, eat only pills that contain everything we need and go on vacation on the moon. Surprisingly, the 21st century looks a lot like the 20th! "Where's my jetpack?" takes a look at the predictions, with a lot of humor of course.
Another book is "How to survive a robot uprising". If scifi movies thought us anything, it's to be prepared for when the robots start a rebellion! I don't know about you guys, but I don't want to end up in a pod full of slime with all sorts of tubes and wires connected to my body.
Talking about evil robots, with the RC Daleks you can start your very own robot army. EX-TER-MI-NATE!
For Nintendo lovers, they have the Legend of Zelda Pixel Diorama, the Mario Bros USB Mouse (altough that looks totally useless to me), the Super Mario Sound Drop, the Plush Mario Sound Bops and the Super Mario Solar Mushroom.

Laser board game

This is not your average, boring board game. First of all, it has lasers! How many board games have lasers? That's right, none! Except this one, wich is called "Khet", and looks like it has been designed by those Egyptian-style aliens from Stargate.
The objective of the game is to fire a laser beam at the opponent's pharao. This is done by placing pieces wich reflect or block the beam on the board. Each turn, players may move a piece one square or rotate it 90°. And even though you can't touch your opponent's pieces, you are free to use them to bounce your laser beam to it's target!

Penny pusher

This toy brings back quite a lot of childhood memories! Everyone who has ever been to a carnival or arcade hall knows this game. You drop coins in the machine, wich end up on a moving platform. The coins are pushed over the platform, eventually fall of and hopefully take some prizes with them. The trick is to time and aim the coins so that they push as many other coins forward. Here's a little secret that I got from Brainiac, Science Abuse: always drop three coins at once in a machine, since the force from three coins together is bigger than the force of three coins seperately. Another secret is that though you can't push the machine without triggering an alarm, you can jump up while standing next to it, since the alarm doesn't register vertical motion.
This game is smaller than the original and doesn't come with prizes, but that doesn't stop it from being fun and addictive as hell! It comes with a big bag of plastic tokens, but nothing stops you from using real money, of course (as long as the coins fit in the slots)!

Piranha Wii Accessories

Piranha has some cool accessories for the Wii, and BeNintendo has listed them with some screenshots. The source article is in Dutch, so I will translate some of the descriptions:

  • Piranha W13 racing wheel; A steering wheel for race games. You place the Wiimote in the wheel.
  • Piranha W14 Exclusive shooting Gun; This turns the Wiimote into a pistol, ideal for first person shooters.
  • Piranha W16 Real Sports-Racket; A tennis racket for Wii sports
  • Piranha W17 Component cable; For connecting the Wii to a plasma or LCD tv
  • Piranha W18 RGB Cable; Like the standard RGB cable that comes with the Wii, but with a second connector for hooking up a second device, like a VCR or DVD player, to the same Scart-connector.
  • Piranha W19 Rechargeable stand + Battery; Keeps your Wiimote charged and ready for action

I'm especially excited about the gun. One of the upcoming Wii games is Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. This will be an "on-rails shooter", wich means you follow a fixed trajectory, like you are moving on rails. At first I thought this wouldn't make a good game, but if you're shooting with a pistol instead of just aiming the Wiimote at the screen it becomes a lot more interesting! Also, the game will have an environment in wich you can destroy almost everything and a two-player co-op mode.
I'm a bit more sceptical about the other accessories (except maybe the steering wheel). For Wii Sports, you could perfectly hang the Wiimote on a real tennis racket (even if it's just a cheap plastic one from a toy store) with some rubber bands. As for the cables, I advise you to be extra careful with those. There have been cases in wich the warranty for gaming consoles was voided by using third-party cables! Make sure you read the warranty agreement very closely to avoid surprises! And the recharge stand with the battery... That's only necessary if you don't already have some sort of battery charger; otherwise rechargable AA's work just fine.

Donut maker

Mmm... Donuts! If you wanted to make donuts yourself before, you needed to make ring-shaped pieces of dough and then deep-fry them, but with this donut maker it becomes a lot easier! It's a bit like a waffle iron for donuts. Just put some dough in it and in five minutes you have perfect donuts! A booklet with recipes and ideas is included with the donut maker. And since you don't fry them in oil, they will contain a lot less fat than regular donuts!

Labyrinth 4D

You probably know those puzzles with metal rings that you have to take apart. This is something like that, but only a million times more difficult. The puzzle consist of a hollow wooden cube with holes in it, and two metal rings with a small gap that you can guide around the cube. The objective of the game is get the rings out of the cube.
Like many puzzles, this one looks simple at first, but it is difficult as hell. Just when you think you almost have found the solution, you'll end up at a dead end and you have to backtrack your steps to find out where you went wrong, only to end up at another dead end. This puzzle is guaranteed to keep you busy for hours, if not days, and will probably drive you mad.

  • hotdog
  • sandwich
  • challah bread
They will be released soon by Vavolo.

But the best thing is what happens when you connect the cubes together. The characters will walk to the other cube, start chatting with their neighbours, pick a fight with them and all other sorts of things. The cubes also have motion sensors, and the cube people will react when you rotate or shake the cube!

Creative preparing iPod Shuffle competitor?

Creative is taking on the battle with Apple's iPod Shuffle! Their new Zen Stone MP3 player will have one gigabyte of memory, enough for about 250 songs, and a battery life of about ten hours. Like the iPod Shuffle, it won't have a display and be as tiny as possible. The main advantage will be the price, wich is estimated at about 40$. That's quite a lot cheaper than the iPod Shuffle!

Digg The Code!

This is not directly gadget related, but it fits nicely in the geek subculture, of wich gadgets are of course an essential part. Yesterday, mutiny broke out on Digg. Somebody posted the key that is used by HD-DVDs to encrypt the contents. Fearing lawsuits, the Digg crew removed the post. However, the key soon appeared again, only to get removed again. This upset the Digg user community and the front page was literally flooded with posts containing the key! I'm not gonna post it here because I don't want to get into trouble, no matter how ridiculous the fact that I can get sued for publishing a prime number is. Anyway, Digg founder Kevin Rose posted an article on the Digg blog, saying that the Digg members made their point clear and they won't be removing any more posts and are ready to deal with the consequences.
And this brings me to the subject of this rant. Geoff Smith wrote a song about the entire thing, titled Digg the code. The HD-DVD key is part of the lyrics, and is also shown in the video, wich features Kevin Rose, Alex Albrecht (hosts of Diggnation and Cali Lewis (host of Geek Brief and hottest geek girl ever). The song even isn't bad at all! The videoclip can be viewed online or downloaded in Quicktime format.

Ninja shuriken clock

This is the coolest clock I have ever seen. An eight-point shuriken, the hands are nunchucks and a chopstick and the pendulum is an ass-kicking ninja! If this doesn't ooze "cool" all over the place I don't know what will! I bet this will definitely raise some eyebrows. I wonder what the hourly chime sound of this thing would be! You can get it at Danna Bananas for 20$.

Weather Station Clock

The Weather Station Clock displays both the room temperature and the exterior temperature. The LCD clock has a 12 or 24 hour format and the temperature can also be displayed in degree Celsius (°C) or Farenheit (°F). The outside temperature is measured via a sensor that is attached to the main device and the outside of a window. Both the indoor and outdoor temperatures are measured for temperature tendency and if there is a variation of more than 1°C within an hour, ascending and descending icons are shown on the main screen. When the outside temperature descends to the range of -1 to -4°C, the frost caution icon will be displayed. The main display has a glass look screen with plastic silver satin finish which is attached to a weighted base. 2 x AG13 button cell batteries included.

USB Battery Charger

Of all the gadgets to plug into your USB port, this one is another quite useful one. This charger plugs into your USB port and can charge two AA or AAA batteries. It draws its power entirely from the USB port. Desktop widgets are included for Windows and Mac OS to check the charge status. Since it's USB powered, it's a bit slower than regular chargers, though, because a USB port can supply 500 mA at most. It can charge two AAA batteries in approximately two hours; I estimate AA batteries would take about five hours. It can also be powered by a wall outlet, with the included adapter.
