Firebox giveaway!

Good news and bad news. Let's start with the good news. Firebox is giving away free stuff in collaboration with Chip Chick. For the next five weeks, they give a box full of random stuff to two lucky winners. All you have to do is send an email (address is in the source article) with “Firebox Giveaway: Week 1″ in the subject line. You can enter each week to increase your chances of winning.
The bad news? It's only open to US residents, wich excludes me. Too bad, I could really use a box full of Firebox stuff.

Mario Kart pull-back cars

These are the coolest pull-back toy cars I have ever seen! Spring-powered Mario-kart themed toy cars, featuring Mario, Wario, Princess Peach, Luigi, Bowser, Donkey Kong and Yoshi. Apparently, no toad. How do these things work? You pull them back to wind up the spring mechanism, and then you release them. They are available in packs of three, and each pack contains three random characters.

Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock

I'm a heavy sleeper. It has happened on more than one occasion that the alarm of my cellphone didn't wake me up. To make sure I wake up, I set all three alarms a few minutes apart. This alarm clock, however, should wake up even the heaviest sleepers!
Meet the Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock! Not only does it look like a bomb with a timer (although I hardly think a real time bomb would have a red glowing countdown display; this probably only exists in movies), it is loud. How loud? One hundred and thirteen decibels to be exactly! That's barely below the pain treshold! And if even that won't wake you up, there's an extra accessory you can place below your mattress and will shake you out of your bed.

PicoZ Apache

I have posted about the awesome PicoZ helicopters before, and now I'm doing it again. Why? Because one of the most badass helicopters in the world, the Apache, is now available as a PicoZ helicopter! It doesn't come with a 30 mm autocannon or laser-guided Hellfire missiles, but with a bit of sick, twisted imagination, it's not too difficult imagining this machine making hamburger meat of that annoying co-worker!

Armageddon Hub

Tired of that dull, boring USB hub? Then try something new, like this: the Armageddon Hub! It has four ports like any other hub, but for dramatic effect, it has a key switch, two arming switches and a big-red-button-of-doom. When pressed (after arming the box) it plays a honking sound. Okay, so it doesn't launch a nuclear apocalypse, but it's still cool as hell to have something dangerous looking on your desk.

DIY PC Kits

Have you ever tried to build a PC? I haven't, because it's barely cheaper and some things are not as easy to install as you may think (such as a CPU cooler). Anyway, that shouldn't discourage real enthousiasts, of course. If you want to give it a try, Easy As My PC is a good choice. They sell DIY PC kits, with all the parts you need to get started!
They sell three computer kits: a basic kit, a business kit and a gaming kit. Alls kits include every part to build the computer itself, a fully illustrated assembly guide and a keyboard and mouse. You can choose Windows XP Media Center Edition or Windows Vista Home Premium for operating system. Too bad you can't choose Linux or simply no OS. You can also choose wether or not to include a monitor (up to 20" wide screen is available) and upgrade the standard graphics card. Finally, you can add a second optical drive, a card reader and a modem (like anyone still uses these things).
All kits come with full manufacturer warranties, and ground shipping is free. Since I assume they operate from the United States, this probably only applies to the US and perhaps Canada.

C64 Games for the Wii!

Yes! This is what I have been waiting for: Commodore 64 games are coming to the Wii Virtual Console! The games will cost 500 Wii points. They will only be available on the European channel, however. Lucky me for living in Belgium!
The first titles that will be available are International Karate and Uridium, and many more will follow soon. Here are some games I hope will come to the Virtual Console soon:

  • Commando
  • Blue Max
  • Drelbs
  • Gateway to Apshai
  • Aztec Challenge

Astromart

If you are into amateur astronomy, Astromart is a website you should take a look at. First of all, they have an interesting news section, with all the latest astronomy stuff. By the way, there will be a total lunar eclipse this evening, so keep an eye on the sky. The next one won't be until 2010.
They also have a classifieds section, wich can come in handy because astronomy equipment can be quite expensive! Besides telescopes there are also binoculars, books, accessories and used cameras for sale. And before buying a telescope, you can read some reviews.
Probably the most interesting section are the forums. With several thousands of active users and thousands of posts per month, this is one the top astronomy forums.

New OpenMoko handset coming

Open Moko has announced they will launch a new handset somewhere in the following months. Their first one, the Neo, hasn't been very succesfull, but perhaps that's gonna change.
So what is this Open Moko thing anyway? Open Moko is an open source mobile phone operating system. So far, only one handset for the OS has been available, the Neo. Also, very few software is available. If the developers want this to become a succes, a decent selection of software is one of the requirements. Also, it doesn't have Java support yet. So let's see what the future brings!

Concentric webhosting

If you need web hosting and aren't satisfied with free hosts or the hosting your ISP provides (wich I don't blame you for because most of the time they suck), take a look at Concentric. They offer a wide range of hosting solutions, from small business hosting to enterprise hosting, starting at very affordable prices.
You have the choice between Unix (standard) and Windows hosting. Unix hosting includes standard scripting and database technologies: PHP, MySQL, Perl, Python and much more. Check out the full list of features, it's quite impressive! Several e-commerce platforms are integrated in their features, so you can have an online store up and running in no time!
Webhosting starts at $15.95 per month for the basic package. When you pay for two years in advance, the price is lowered to $11.95 per month. This gives you 2000 megabytes of web space, 40 gigabytes of traffic and up to 80 email users. The most luxurious package, Enterprise+, costs $225 per month and comes with an impressive 20,000 megabytes of space, 250 gigabytes of traffic and up to 500 email users.

You put the pieces together like a regular jigsaw, and then stack the layers on top of each other to form Homer's head! In total, the puzzle contains 150 layers and over 750 pieces. Apparently, Homer Simpson is like an onion. Or an ogre. When completed, the sculpture can be painted with the included paint.

Alpha Grip

The Alpha Grip is a really unique input device. It combines a keyboard, mouse and gamepad in one handheld controller! The unit is loaded with buttons and a trackball, and claims typing speeds of up to 70 words per minute are possible! Buttons are placed on both the front and back side, so it should be easy to use all ten fingers.
I guess it should not be too difficult to learn to use this thing and with some practice, you could reach fast typing speeds. However, I don't see this replacing keyboards. Might be of use for a media center pc, where you sit in a couch and watch everything on your tv.

Disguised as a vase, it contains a 2-way speaker system and an accoustic lens to reflect the sound in all directions. It's USB-powered, so you don't need a power adapter. It also has bass and treble control to adjust the sound, and on/off status is indicated with an orange glowing LED.

iPhone unlocking in the UK

The major downside of the iPhone is that it comes with an expensive contract, and you can't change it just like that. The phone's software locks the phone so it only works on one network. Of course, there are ways to unlock iphones so they work on any network. Unlike what some people think, this is legal.
iPhone Unlock sells a tool that will unlock any iPhone. You can download and install it yourself (the cheapest solution) or you can go to one of their shops and have a technician install it. It works on any phone, no matter where you bought it. It will unlock your phone so it works on any network, worldwide, and leaves all funtionality intact with the exception of Visual Voicemail, wich is a network-specific option. This is by far the easiest and most user-friendly way of unlocking an iPhone!

Tangent Quattro Wifi Radio

Another excellent internet radio receiver is the Tangent Quattro Wifi Radio. This radio connects to the internet through a wifi connection (you don't need a pc) and can receive over six thousand radio stations from around the world. And if you can't find a radio station you like (wich is highly unlikely), you can always stream audio from your pc. The radio plays back MP3, WMA, Real Audio, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, WAV, AIFF and AU. And finally, you can connect your MP3 player to it and use it as a speaker. The radio also had an alarm clock with snooze function.

Charger Station

One of the less pleasant side effects of having a lot of electronic gadgets is having a lot of chargers. I have a drawer that's always a gigantic mess of cables and plug-in adapters. A charger for my cellphone, my MP3 player, a charger for AA-batteries, ... I try to keep the number of chargers to a minimum by choosing gadgets that run on AA or AAA batteries when I have the choice, but many things use a battery that's designed for that device only, so you're stuck with a charger that only works on that gadget.
Vat 19 now has a nice solution for the mess these things create: the electronics charging station! What is it? It's a box that can hold up to three charging devices, with their chargers. In the back is a five outlet surge protector to plug in the chargers, keeping the chargers and cables out of sight. In addition to that, the unit also has a drawer for storing accessories.

USB lock

While this isn't exactly the most high tech thing to put in a USB port, it sure is useful! A USB port on a public pc is a potential security risk. Anyone can plug in a USB stick and put a virus, keylogger or any other type of dangerous type of software on it. Sure, you can disable them, but in public libraries for example this is rarely done. Besides, it's not impossible to unlock them again.
That's where this thing comes in handy. It's a lock that you place in a USB port so it's inaccessible. It can even be used on a port that has a device plugged in, so users can't unplug the keyboard, for example, and plug in a USB stick.

New Pico Z helicopters

As if the Pico Z mini helicopters weren't cool enough already, they decided to make a few more and make them even more awesome! Three new flying machines they have, and here they are:

The X-Twin Pro is a remote controlled stunt plane with two independently controlled electric motors. Featuring a 3-channel remote control, this plane can perform some pretty amazin aerobatics! What gives this plane its exceptional manoevrability? It turns by controlling the power of the motors, not with a tail fin. Altitude is controlled in the traditional way.
The plane is available for three different channels, each with its own color, so you can fly up to three planes at once. Twenty minutes of charging is enough for ten minutes of flying.

Alienware media server

Alienware has designed a new high definition media server. Under the hood is a powerful server with up to four terabytes of drive space in a RAID-5 configuration. Behind the front panel are four hot swappable harddrive bays and a DVD writer. An optional Bluray writer is also available.
The server has two tuners, so you can record two channels at once. It is also possible to connect two more tuners, making it possible to record up to four channels! The rear panel hosts every possible kind of video input you can think of, and a gigabit network connection. Wireless connectivity is available as an option, but that would be rather slow for high definition media.

After signing up, you put a special widget in blog posts that you want to market through Buzzfuse. This widget is then used to track visitors, apply rankings and recommend the post to other users. Internet radio is one of the greatest things ever invented. Thousands of radio stations that play every kind of music you can imagine, live sports coverage, talk shows, everything! The only drawback: you need to turn your computer on. With this wonderful device, that's no longer necessary!
The BLIK Wifi Radio connects to the internet through a wifi connection and can receive over 8000 radio stations! Unlike similar systems that simply stream music from your pc, this one doesn't require a pc. All you need is an internet connection and a wireless router.
The radio has a large LCD screen that displays song and radio station information. You can set up to eight favorite radio stations, connects to an iPod and has a headphone and line output, so you can hook it up to your stereo. 32GB Memory Card

The capacity of memory cards is ever increasing. Sandisk has unveiled its newest type, the Ultra II card, wich has a 32 gigabyte capacity and a read/write speed of 15MB/s. While 32 gigs is a bit of overkill for taking pictures, it's excellent for camcorders that use memory cards instead of tape, harddrives or mini dvds. What I don't understand, though, is why the hell all cameras still come with a useless 16 megabyte card?
