FC Mobile Portable Console

Here's another more or less useless gadget. This portable gaming console can play original NES games. That's right, you can put those old, huge cartridges in it to play them. Why this is such a bad idea? One, a NES cartridge is twice the size of the console itself. Two, there are plenty of emulators for the PSP or any type of PDA. So unless you've got a load of old NES games you're dying to play on a tiny LCD display, this belongs in the category "What the hell were they thinking?".

Remote Controlled VTOL Aircraft

This plane is an attempt at making a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) remote controlled plane that's not a helicopter. While it's not a very good one (it's essentially a four bladed helicopter with wings to disguise it as a plane), it still looks pretty cool. It's quite easy to fly, and most important, it can easily take a crash!

Ultra-tiny HP laptop

Tiny laptops seem to be the newest hype. There's the Asus EEE PC, and of course the way too expensive Macbook Air. HP has jumped on the bandwagon and here's the result: the HP Mini-Note.
Here are some of the specs. It has a 1.2 ghz VIA C7 CPU, 1 gigabyte of ram and a 120 gigabyte harddrive. The 8.9" display has a resolution of 1280x768, wich is quite impressive for such a small display. The keyboard is 92% of the standard size, so typing is still quite comfortable. Wifi and bluethooth, a VGA webcam and memory card reader are available.
The computer comes with Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop. A version with Windows Vista is available, but costs $300 more. I wouldn't recommend getting the Windows version, because the specs don't seem to be very Windows-friendly. Of course, you can always install your own OS on it, but keep in mind HP doesn't supply Windows XP drivers.

Microwave & Toaster

A common joke when a cellphone with lots of useless extras and addons is announced is: "Does it also have a built-in toaster?". No such phone has that feature yet, but this microwave oven does! Not too much to say about it. A regular microwave oven and a regular toaster put together.
Perhaps a good application for this is my version of the grilled cheese sandwich. One day I got the brilliant idea of microwaving a cheese sandwich. The result wasn't too great, of course. I improved it by first toasting the bread, putting cheese on it and then microwaving it, so the bread was still crunchy. This oven/toaster combo is just perfect for that!

Rapid Glass

A cracked windshield can be pretty dangerous. Once the glass is broken, even if it's just a tiny crack, the strength of the entire windshield is reduced and it can easily shatter at unexpected moment. If your windshield gets damaged in any way, you should have it repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
Rapid Glass, a St. Paul windshield repair company based in Minneapolis, is specialized in car and home glass repair and replacement. Small cracks can be repaired practically invisible, while seriously damaged or destroyed windows will be replaced the same day. To meet quality standards, they only use original manufacturer components, so you are always getting top quality.

Fujitsu F-A50

Fujitsu has announced an all-in-one desktop pc that seems to be inspired by the iMac. Computers like this are, in fact, laptops disguised as desktops. The specs don't really look that impressive:

  • 16" widescreen display (wich is just too small for a desktop)
  • 2.1 ghz Intel core duo
  • 2 gb of ram
  • 250 gb harddrive
  • integrated X3100 graphics
  • wifi

Unless it's cheap, I see no future for this.

Lumin Lamp

Candles may be romantic, but not exactly high tech. Let's face it: you're lighting up your place with something invented by cavemen! The Lumin Lamp is a mood light for the 21st century. Instead of burning hydrocarbons, it uses led lights to create a pleasant glow. It's equipped with a 7 watt led bulb, wich is good for 1500 hours of light on 3 C-size batteries, and it's available in three colors.

High Definition Camcorder

With HD TV finally becoming more mainstream, camcorders simply have to follow. And here are a few nice ones to start with: the Aiptek HD Camcorders. Both cameras can record in 1280x720 resolution af 30 frames per second, and can store up to two hours of video on a 4 gb memory card. They have a 3x optical zoom lens and a built-in Li-ion battery.
A memory card is not included (wich is always better than a 16 megabyte card, like you still get with today's cameras, even though they are useless). Cards up to 32 gb are supported.

Tube Amps for the iPod

Definitely one of the most expensive accessories for the iPod you can think of: a tube amplifier! Claimed to sound better and 'warmer' (whatever that may mean) than transistor amplifiers by audiophiles, these tube amps have been designed to act as iPod docks. I doubt these things sell well, because the same people who claim these things sound better also claim that vinyl sounds better than a cd, so they probably won't use iPods at all.
Should you decide to buy one of these things, keep in mind that you're wasting your money unless you also get a kick ass speaker set (no, those cheap Logitech desktop speakers really won't do), and your audio files better have a very high bitrate!

Rubik's Cube Alarm Clock

Everybody knows the Rubik's Cube. I myself have wasted countless hours trying to solve it, and when I finally did, I didn't have the slightest clue how I did it. I never managed to solve it again after that.
This clock is a bit easier to use. It looks like the fiendishly addictive puzzle, has date and time display, alarm function and a thermometer. To switch between the functionalities, you just twist the top part.

Micro Projector

This is propably the smallest LCD projector I have ever seen. Judging from the picture, it looks about the same size as an average camcorder. It has audio and composite video inputs, and also an SD card slot. While it's small and quite cheap, remember that tiny projectors like this usually don't have very impressive picture quality.

Inkjet Deals

If you print a lot using a laser or inkjet printer, things can get on the expensive side quite rapidly! Photo paper, but especially ink and toner cartridges, are not exactly cheap. Luckily, there are alternatives to buying expensive brand-name supplies every time.
Inkjet Deals offers a detailed overview of all available options to make printing cheaper, such as compatible generic cartridges and cheap inkjet printer refill kits.
Cheaper ink cartridges come in two kinds: generic and remanufactured cartridges. Generic cartridges are cartridges that are compatible with a printer but aren't originally manufactured by the supplier. Remanufactured cartridges are used, original brand name cartridges that have been refilled instead of disposed. You can buy these, have your own empty cartridges refilled at some shops or, if you have a steady hand and aren't afraid to get them a bit dirty, refill them yourself!
To lower the price even more, Inkjet Deals has a selection of coupon codes for certain suppliers. For All Ink, they have discounts up to 80% and free shipping on orders over $40. For 00 Inkjets, up to 75% discount is available.
Keep also in mind that certain manufacturers void your warranty if you use any ink other than their own. If you plan on using alternative ink cartridges, you should buy a printer that has the printing heads in the cartridge, not the printer itself. In the unlikely event you ruin the printing heads you can always just get a new cartridge and your printer won't be ruined.

3G iPhone Coming?

Apple just keeps on screwing its cult members, excuse me, users! First, they create a hype around the iPhone (wich isn't that difficult, they could make a hype out of anything by putting an "i" in front of it), knowing very well that fanboys anywhere will camp in front of stores to get their new shiny toy the minute it becomes available at a ridiculous price. I don't see people sleeping on the sidewalk for the new Nokia or Samsung phone, but hey, they don't have Steve Jobs.
Then, not long after the launch, they cut the price by $200, wich made a lot of people pissed! Okay, you got a $100 coupon, so you could buy one of their other expensive gadgets. The first reviews of the iPhone weren't enthousiastic at all. Features that other, cheaper phones had were missing, such as the ability to send MMS messages and using MP3 files as ringtones. The most prominent missing feature, however, was 3G.
The latest rumour now is that a 3G enabled iPhone will be available within two months. So once again, Apple fanboys will be lined up in front of stores to pay big bucks for a gadget they already have, plus the feature it should have had to begin with! I wonder what the next feature will be, for when they want to screw people again in, let's say, six months. The iPhone Nano?

The GEAR4 Blackbox is a Bluethooth stereo speaker system that can be used with mobile phones, laptops and MP3 players. When turned off, it looks like a dull black box. 56K USB Modem

My first thought about this was: "What the hell? These things still exist?". Apparently, they do. And apparently, people still use them. I don't think there are that much ISP's anymore that offer dialup access (uhhh... just typing it makes me shiver). So if all you have is a phone line and rather face the horrors of dialup access than no access at all, this is a useful thing. Otherwise, this is an evil piece of obsolete technology that deserves to go to tech hell.

Second Life comes to cellphones?

Apparently, Second Life is coming to cellphones soon. Samsung has demonstrated a handset that's capable of running it, so you can access it from anywhere.
In my opinion, this is something that is gonna suck like nothing else before. I have tried Second Life for exactly ten minutes and is a horrible, horrible piece of junk. It never runs smooth and looks plain and simply ugly. Can Linden Labs please explain me why Blizzard manages to make World of Warcraft look great and run at a decent framerate, and why it's impossible for them to make a world that looks like a ten year old 3D engine prototype run at more than ten frames per second? Let's face it: Second Life sucks! Before they even begin to think about moving it to mobile platforms they better try to make it run decently on desktop computers!

April Fools day at Think Geek

A yearly tradition at Think Geek is the collection of fake april fools gadgets. Although they are obviously fake, sometimes people really fall for them. A few years ago, a well-known computer magazine even wrote an article about their "wireless extension cords"!
So, what do they have in store for us this year? For starters, there's the Personal Soundtrack T-Shirt, wich has a built-in speaker so your life can always have a soundtrack, like in the movies.
Super Pii Pii Bros sounds like something that might be real. Sure, the idea is disgusting, but Nintendo has done some unconventional things before. Besides, making nerds with no sense for rhythm dance is also disgusting but Dance Dance Revolution has been a huge succes. How does this work? Strap you Wiimote to the included belt and pee in the onscreen toilet!
And to celebrate the virtues of obsolete technology, there's the Betamax to HD-DVD converter! Now you can convert all those precious Beta tapes to the state of the art HD-DVD format and then look down on the rest of the world and claim it's a million times better than Blueray.
The best gadget, however, is the Youtube Tazer. Face it: people getting tazed = funny! It's even more funny when the helpless target is carrying a cup of scalding hot coffee or a bottle of corrosive chemicals. And to share the fun of senseless violence with the rest of the world, this tazer has a built-in video camera so your victil will be twitching and screamin on Youtube in no time!
For this and a lot more funny gadgets, head over to Think Geek. You can even pre-order your copy of Wii Sports for the iPhone!
